Abstract

1,266,604. Casting - machines ; moulds. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 13 March, 1969 [21 March, 1968], No. 13271/69. Heading B3F. Alloy pieces, e.g. of Fe-Si or Si-Mn, for use in alloying, are cast continually, in cavities 18, possibly of different sizes, in the surface of a removable Cu or graphite sleeve 16 on a cylindrical base 12 fixed on a rotated shaft 14 so that the solidified pieces fall out of the cavities 18, for collection by a shoot 78, Fig. 4, for example. The melt at less than 50‹ C. above its melting point is poured from a furnace or ladle, possibly through heated shoots or pipes; or from a container 22 supported on a rod 24 and bar 26 maintained close to the apparatus by a spring- loaded arrangement 28; or from a heated distributer 74, Fig. 4, with a number of nozzles 72. Flow of excess metal is retarded by a bar 27. The apparatus operates in Ar or N 2 in an asbestos-cement cover 29 with nozzles 33 for spraying a cooling mist of liquid or another gas on to the cavities 18 or for introducing the gas, which may, however, be introduced through a lower opening (31). Cooling water from a coaxial pipe in the hollow shaft 14 flows through an end header in the base 12 to ducts 20 in the sleeve 16 to a collector header at the other end for passing out through the shaft 14.
