Abstract
1,266,425. Dielectric waveguides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. May 16, 1969 [May 17, 1968], No.25071/69. Heading G2J. A dielectric waveguide suitable for optical frequencies comprises a low loss strip 10 embedded in low loss dielectric substrate material 11 of refractive index lower than that of the strip, the strip being of such dimensions as to support only the fundamental of each of two sets of orthogonally polarized families of modes, and having some means 12 disposed along one wide surface of the strip for preventing one of the two fundamental modes from propagating. The means 12 may comprise a high admittance metal material, or a lossy material. The substrate may comprise more than one material, as in Fig. (not shown).
