Abstract

1512452 Light guides SIEMENS AG 29 April 1975 [14 May 1974] 17686/75 Heading G2J An optical waveguide directional coupler comprises two or more dielectric strip waveguides 3, 4 integrated on a substrate 1, and a dielectric film 5 of a material which has a lower refractive index than that of the waveguides and is thinner than they are, separating the waveguides. A dielectric 12 of the same material as the substrate covers the waveguide 3. In a modification, see Fig. 3 (not shown), two strip waveguides (8, 9) are arranged side by side inset beneath the surface of a substrate (7), a dielectric film (10) over-lying them both, and a coupling waveguide (11) over-lies the film under the material 12.
