When a refuse bin 18, Fig. 1, is correctly positioned in an infeed opening of a refuse shoot, sensors are operated which release the bin so that it can subsequently fall down the shoot 2. The sensors release a carriage 8, into which the bin is placed, by raising detents from toothed racks such as 66. The sensors may be above the bin, e.g. 60, Fig. 1, or 50, Fig. 3, or at the sides of the bin as at 34. A bottom hinged door 28, Fig. 1, is pulled down to open it before the bin is placed in the carriage. When an outer door 6 is closed a link 68 pushes the carriage inwards towards the shaft 2 and when the bin is over the shaft it falls through a hole in the bottom of the carriage. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, the bin is supported above the shaft 70 on a plate 76 hinged at 77. When the door 72 is closed pivoted abutments 78 cause a latch which supports the door to be withdrawn so that the door pivots downwards and the bin falls down the shoot. Latches 84 are operated by the abutments 78. Alternatively the back of the bin may release latches 96 when it abuts members 94.
