Abstract
1,266,224. Sulphomethylated acrylamide polymers. MARTIN-LUTHER-UNIVERSI. TAT HALLE-WITTENBERG. 2 April, 1969, No. 17200/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C1] Water-soluble acrylamide polymers are reacted in aqueous solution with formaldehyde and/or a substance which gives off formaldehyde under the reaction conditions employed and with a water-soluble compound which contains a sulpho group and which reacts with formaldehyde, at a pH value of 9-13 and at a temperature of 40-70� C., the reactants being used in such proportions that sulphomethyl groups are substituted on 20-50% of the amide groups and methylol groups are substituted on up to 15% of the amide groups. The starting polymer may be polyacrylamide or a copolymer of acrylamide with another monomer, e.g. vinylsulphonic acid. The water-soluble sulpho compound may be, for example, sodium bisulphite, taurine or methyl taurine. The water-soluble polymer products are useful as auxiliary filtering agents for precipitated metal hydroxides (see Division C1).
