[Also in Divisions C6 and C7] Wet bagasse is delivered by shoot 51 and pressed between a perforate drum 16 and an imperforate roller 10, the drum and roller being rotated by separate motors and roller 10 rotating about an axis which is offset by an angle of 30 to 60 degrees from the vertical relative to the axis of drum 16. Water enters drum 16 through inwardly widening perforations and leaves through annular apertures 52 in its ends, being subsequently pumped from chamber 53. Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown) illustrate the internal structure of drum 16, which is reinforced by circumferential flanges and radial plates and encloses a pair of cones which isolate the central volume. Roller 10 may be similarly reinforced and may contain a variable quantity of a selected liquid whose weight is transmitted through the shell of the roller to the bagasse. Roller 10 is journalled on a pair of arms (12, 13), freely pivoted at their lower ends. Shoot 51 is inclined at 43 degrees to horizontal. Drum 16 and roller 10 are engaged by respective scrapers 56, 55. Conveyers (50) and 54 deliver and remove bagasse from the apparatus. Using a pressure of 70 p.s.i. wet bagasse from the sugar extracting stage has its water content reduced from 85 to 70%, and a second pressing stage (not disclosed) reduces it to 50%, at which it is combustible. Feed shoot 51 may be perforate to drain off free water before pressing.
