A machine for cutting pile material, e.g. tufted material, along a line parallel to a tufted edge thereof comprises a sensing device having a pair of runners 27, 28 between which the material passes and arranged to contact a lateral edge of the pile, the runners being spring- urged together and mounted on a carriage 24 which is vertically adjustable in order to correspond with the height of the travel path of the material. The runner 27 is connected by a bracket 26 to the carriage 24 and the runner 28 connected to the latter by means of rods 30 and springs 29; the spacing between the runners can be adjusted by a screw device 42, 43 and they may be coated with P.T.F.E. to reduce friction. The carriage is slidable on a guide-bar 23 via bearings 25, which bar is mounted on a plate 22 vertically adjustable on a carriage 13 by means of a screw 16 and pin-and-slot devices 18, 19. Side edges of the runners 27, 28 are held in contact with the pile edge as shown in Fig. 1 by means of a cable 32 connected at one end to the carriage and at the other end to a weight 31; alternatively, the weight may be replaced by pneumatic or hydraulic means. The carriage 13 is adjustably mounted on an arm 11 by means of a rack-and-pinion device, the arm being laterally movable by drive means which also operates the cutting device; the cutting device is also mounted on the arm. In operation, the pile material is fed between the runners positioned, in the direction of feed, in front of the cutter. In the event of an irregularity in the pile edge the carriage 24 is moved so that a lug 37 thereon actuates one or other of proximity magnetic switches 35, 36 thereby causing the drive means to move the arm laterally, together with the cutter, until the particular switch is de-energized. Similarly, if the pile edge runs under the upper runner 28, the latter lifts against the action of the springs 29 until a rod 30 actuates a switch 38, this again causing the arm to move laterally until the normal position is reached.
