Abstract

1,265,340. Cigarette-making machines. R. J. REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO. 14 Oct., 1969 [29 Oct., 1968], No. 50377/69. Heading A2C. [Also in Divisions H3 and H5] A band sealer 10 for heat sealing the overlapping edges 12, 14 of cigarette paper filled with tobacco 13, after edge 12 has been pasted by a paster wheel 16 and the paper formed into a tobacco filled tube by passing it through a shaped channel 18 on folder block 20, comprises a thin strip 36 of electrically resistive material held in a heat resistant support 32 and pressed against the cigarette wrapper 11 by, e.g. a saddle weight 34, the temperature of said strip 36 being maintained at a predetermined value by, e.g. thermocouple sensors 40 engaging opposite ends of the strip and connected through an amplifier to a phase control circuit for the resistance strip 36. The phase control circuit controls the phase angle at which a.c. power is supplied to the strip 36. The support 32 comprises two or more members with cooperating mortised ends shaped to fit coaxially. A compression spring 38 provided in coaxial recesses in members 32 urges them apart to keep the Ni-Cr or stainless steel strip 36 taut. Thermister could be used instead of thermocouples.
