Abstract

1,265,198. Hydrocarbon copolymers. MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 Sept., 1969 [17 Sept., 1968; 2 June, 1969], No. 45929/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C2] Copolymers, claimed per se, consisting of (A) an alpha-monoethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon unit, and (B) a unit of the formula wherein Z is a divalent C 2-20 hydrocarbon group, the -CH 2 -CH- group being separated from the oxygen atom by at least two carbon atoms, and A<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or an acyl group, the unit (B) being present as 0À005-30 mol. per cent relative to unit (A), are prepared by polymerizing at least one alpha-monoethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon with at least one ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbyloxy compound of the general formula wherein Z is a divalent C 2-20 hydrocarbon group, the vinyl group being separated from the oxygen atom by at least two carbon atoms, A is halogen and/or a monovalent C 1-8 hydrocarbon group, M is a Group I, II, III or IV metal, n is an integer from 1 to the valency of the metal M and m is equal to (M-n), or MAm is vanadyl and n is 3 in the presence of a catalyst which comprises a halogen compound of titanium or vanadium, and, where the ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbyloxy compound contains no metal-carbon bond, an organoaluminium or organozinc compound which contains one or more such bonds. The catalyst can be destroyed with an alcohol, hydrochloric acid or a carboxylic acid anhydride to give a copolymer containing hydrogen or an acyl group (i.e. A<SP>1</SP>). In the examples the following are prepared: copolymers of propylene with 10 - undecene - 1 - ol, 10 - undecenyl acetate, 2 - allyl phenol, 4 - pentene - 1 - ol, 5 - hexene- 1 - ol, 1 - methyl - 5 - pentene - 1 - ol, and 2,7- octadiene - l - ol, ethylene/10 - undecen - l - ol, ethylene/4-pentene-1-ol, 4 - methyl - 1 - pentene/10 - undecen - 1 - ol and a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and 10-undecen-1-ol. The exemplified metals M are Al, Zn, K, Ti, Ca, Mg and Na; the exemplified titanium and vanadium compounds are TiCl 4 , TiCl 3 and VOCl 3 and the exemplified additional organo metallic compounds are (C 2 H 5 ) 2 AlCl, 2-allylphenoxydiethylaluminium, (C 2 H 5 ) 2 Zn and ethylaluminium sesquichloride. The aftertreatment of the polymer products described comprises (a) acetylation by treatment with pyridine and acetic anhydride in xylene; (b) uretanation by treatment with phenyl isocyanate; (c) moulding into pellets, extruding and stretching in water to form filaments which are dyed in a bath containing a disperse dye in a dispersing agent; (d) blending with a homopolymer of ethylene or propylene, in one case followed by dyeing; and (e) blending of propylene/10-undecene-1-ol copolymer with propylene homopolymer and toluene diisocyanate and forming a cross-linked copolymer by the action of heat and pressure.
