1346234 Olefin polymer compositions MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 32141/71 Heading C3P Compositions comprise (a) 3 to 40 parts by weight of an ethylene polymer, which is a copolymer with at least one other α-olefin, and has a density of 0À880 to 0À945 g/cc., a molecular weight of 20,000 to 100,000, a softening point of 80 to 130‹ C., a crystallinity of up to 10% and a melt index of 1 to 10, and containing 5 to 100 C 1-4 alkyl side chains per 1000 carbon atoms, and (b) 60 to 97 parts by weight of a propylene polymer containing at least 90 mole per cent, of propylene and having a crystallinity of at least 40 per cent. The propylene polymer may contain small proportions of ethylene or butene, and the ethylene polymer may be prepared by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a minor proportion of another olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising an organoaluminium compound or dialkyl zinc and a titanium and/or vanadium halide supported on magnesium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, a metal halide, a Group II metal halide containing water or alcohol, or a double oxide of alumina, in the presence of hydrogen. Examples describe the copolymerization of ethylene with propylene or butene in the presence of hydrogen and catalysts formed from triethyl aluminium and titanium tetrachloride supported on magnesium oxide. The products are blended with polypropylene and propylene/ ethylene copolymers and moulded to form bottles and films.
