Abstract
1,264,693. Selective printing. ING. C. OLIVETTI & C. S.p.A. 8 Sept., 1969 [26 Sept., 1968; 21 June, 1969], No. 44347/69. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machines sliding for impression.- A line of printing elements, e.g. type-wheels 11, are set for parallel printing from a store one-ata-time by a setting wheel 108 transversely movable to be coupled with each type-wheel in succession and rotated by a clutch actuated under control of the corresponding character datum in the store and impression is effected in parallel after a line has been set. The type wheels 11 are mounted on separate slide frames 14 and impression is effected by springs 25 when the frame 14 is released by a bail 24 controlled from a cam 33. In the raised non-operative position the type-wheels engage with a wheel 76 and, when being set by the setting wheel 108. The setting wheel 108 is set by a clutch 173, Fig. 5, comprising a tongue 181 on a slider 182 engaging a toothed clutch wheel 174 on a sleeve 176 having a drive pulley 177. The slider 182 is connected to a wheel 186 with teeth 187 equivalent to the teeth on the setting wheel 108. Co-operating with the toothed wheel 186 is a pulse generator 219 which generates a count signal for each tooth movement and sends it to comparator so that the clutch is opened by a magnet 196 when the setting wheel has rotated the right amount. After setting of one type-wheel 11, the setting wheel 108 steps to the next position by means of an electromagnetically operated escapement mechanism, see Fig. 4. The setting wheel is in mesh via pinion 110 with a pinion 111 mounted on a carriage comprising a bail 113 and arms 116. The carriage is pulled by a cable 113 against the bias of a helical spring 138, see Fig. 2. Resetting of type-wheels.-A cam (106, Fig. 3) effects resetting of wheels by means of sector (101), gear (99) and teeth (81) on shaft (77) engaging teeth 79 on intermediate wheels 76. Aligning for impression.-As the slide frames move downwardly -for impression positioning members 21 move between the teeth 12 of the wheels 11. A bar 89 at the beginning of a cycle is brought into engagement with intermediate wheels 76 to effect alignment. Suppression of impression.-If the wheels are set to a position requiring no impression the slide 14 is held by a latch 96, Fig. 1, which pivots into the path of a lug 97 due to the additional depth of a gap 98 on the intermediate wheels 76. Platen.-The platen comprises a resilient strip 26 supported by a channel 227. Record support; feeding; record stops.-The record 222, e.g. a savings bank book, is inserted through a slot 224 on to a plate 225 in which the platen strip 26 is housed. The plate 225 has apertures 228, Fig. 2, in which advancing rollers 229 and pressure rollers 236 are positioned. Roller 229 is driven continuously by pulley 232 and belt 233 after the motor of the machine has been started by the positioning of a book against stops 243 and closing of micro-switch 245. The stops 243 set the position of printing of the first line and are positioned manually by an indicator wheel 271 (Fig. 7, not shown), which rotates a pinion (258) and pinion 257, Fig. 1, in mesh with a rack 256 moving a carriage structure 254, 249 and the stops 243. The carriage is held by a spring detent wheel (266) against the pull of a spring 260. Line-spacing.-A pawl (281, Fig. 7) is actuated in the second half of a machine cycle to advance a spacing wheel (282) in opposition to the spring 260. Special line-feed.-The detent wheel (266) positioning the record carriage has a first portion (267) devoid of notches corresponding to the top margin of the book 222 and a second portion (268) corresponding to the space adjacent the fold of the book. After the indicator wheel 271 has set the stops 243, a switch 303 automatically operates to start the machine. After the last-line of the first page is printed, a pin (274) causes a three-line space advance. After the last line of entry in the book has been made, a signal from the control unit (91), or a microswitch 314, Fig. 1, is closed to end travel of the carriage, and an electromagnet (302, Fig. 8) is operated. Pressure rollers 236 are in consequence moved from feed rollers 229, and the spring 260 pulls on the rack 256 and carriage to eject the book.
