Abstract

597,664. Type-printing telegraphy. TELETYPE CORPORATION. July 20, 1945, No. 18655. Convention date, April 6, 1944. [Class 40 (iii)] Telegraph recording. apparatus comprises a plurality of recording strips, and carriers therefor, selectable by a recording-mechanism movable with respect thereto and adapted to record a succession of characters across a selected strip. A sixunit code is employed and the reception of a tabulation signal, consisting of one of a number of lower - case characters, selectively sets five code vanes 17 and a sixth, case-shift vane 17a, as in Specification 365,975. The setting of vane 17a to its lettershift position allows a function lever 19 to be rocked to the left and back again by a cam (not shown) and a pawl 42 pivoted at 47 thereon advances a ratchet 46 to open contacts 51 and suppress the distant transmitter. At the same time via bell-cranks 53, 56 the ratchet 46 removes a projection 59 from a disc 62 and allows it and gear 63 to rotate under frictional drive from a shaft 16 to traverse the carriage 22 by means of gearing 64, 65, 66 and rack 67. The permutative arrangement of the code vanes 17 is transmitted by bellcranks 23 to code combination bars 25 which select the typepallet 26 desired. The bellcranks 23 also selectively arrange five probes 28 pivoted thereon at 27 and as the carriage 22 traverses, these probes will encounter a unique alignment of slots 33 in five fixed bars 32 into which they can drop simultaneously. When this occurs a bail 34 is pulled down by spring 35, striking a bar 39 and turning a bail 41 about its pivot 44 to release pawls 42, 43 and again place the obstruction, 59 in the path of a projection 61 on disc 62 which ceases to rotate and brings the carriage 22 to rest opposite a selected tape 31. Printing is effected in known manner by a printing bail 79 moving under the action of a spring 82 and a cam (not shown), but is suppressed during the tabulation movement of the carriage 22, function lever 19 placing a shoulder 76 beneath a print suppression member 77 integral with the printing bail 79. Printing takes place transversely of the tape 31 and conventional spacing and line feed is provided as in Specification 365,975. The platen comprises a plurality of coaxial rollers 91, each with a magazine 92 holding the tape supplies 94. A. modification (Figs. 9... 11, not shown) permits lower-case printing. The tabulation function lever 19 is replaced by one which is unaffected by the case-shift vane 17a, but is selected only when the carriage 22 is at the starting position and a bar, extending the whole width of travel of the carriage, thereby presents a notch to the tabulation function lever. After tabulation it is necessary to send a carriage return signal before further tabulation can be effected, but this may be avoided by providing a plurality of tabulating notches. The platens 91 are replaced by printing anvils individually positioned vertically by caseshift mechanism under control of the sixth, case-shift vane.
