Abstract

In a packaging machine, wherein a sheet of synthetic plastics film 14 is fed continuously by rollers 12, 13 for entrainment, by suction ducts 15, around the surface 10a of a turntable 10 having package pockets 16 into which packages (not shown) are pushed so that blanks 17, separated from the web, are wrapped in a U- shape around the packages, and spaced cutters 18, co-operate with a fixed blade 19 to separate successive blanks 17, a loop 20 is formed in the sheet before the hindmost of two cutters carries out a separating cut. In this manner the length of each blank, measured peripherally of the turntable 10, is greater than the peripheral spacing of a pair of cutters 18. A rocking arm 22 forms a suitable stock of material in the feed line, the loops 20 being formed by two strikers 24, 25 on a bridge element 26 which is rotatable in synchronism with the turntable 10, each striker carrying a pin 27 which is spring-urged outwardly against a stop 32 and is adapted to push a loop 20 into a corresponding package pocket 16. The depth to which a pin 27 enters a corresponding pocket 16, and the size of the loop 20 formed can be varied by adjusting the arm 31.
