Abstract
1,264,133. VTOL aircraft. HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd. 5 Aug., 1969 [5 Aug., 1968], No. 37195/68. Heading B7G. An aircraft lift-pod 11, Fig. 1, contains a plurality of multi-nozzled direct lift engines 12, spaced apart and housed in individual streamlined cowlings 21 extending from the engine inlet to the jet nozzle assembly. A pair of doors 14 admits air to the engines and to the spaces 13 left therebetween for this purpose, and a pair of doors 15 allows exit of the air and efflux gas. A mixing chamber 17, Fig. 3, for the secondary airflow and the nozzle efflux gases is formed when doors 15 are opened to form a retractable. skirt 16; more direct air thereto may be provided by extra pairs of doors 20. To obtain an ample skirt length 16, the two doors 15 may be arranged to overlap fully as shown; or, folding doors may be employed, when each door 15 may have an extra section hinged thereto. Alternatively, movable lowor portions of the pod fairing are caused to slide down until their tops are at the same level as the nozzle exits, thereby also creating inlet openings in the pod walls for additional secondary air. By-pass type engines may be used for forward propulsion.
