Abstract

1,264,020. Needle guard. C. R. BARD, Inc. 3 Nov., 1969 [4 Nov., 1968], No. 53777/69. Heading ASR. A needle guard 30 for use with a catheter assembly comprises two generally flat, approximately rectangular portions 31, 32 hinged at 33, each portion having a groove 50 formed parallel to the hinge 33 so that upon folding together the portions 31 and 32 about hinge 33, the two grooves combine to form a generally cylindrical passageway extending the entire length of the portions. Components of a "purse-snap" closing means 35 are formed on the free long edges of both of the portions 31, 32 for cooperation when the sides of the portions containing the grooves 50 are brought together. The grooves are formed in three zones 41, 42 and 43, including two zones of uniform diameter, one larger than the other, and a flared zone 43 adjacent the zone 42, the zone of larger diameter, and these zones are intended to accommodate a catheter, needle and part of a hub respectively, the latter apparatus being held in the passageway upon closing the guard. The catheter assembly (10) Fig. 1 (not shown) comprises a needle (11) connected to a two-stage hub (14) and (15) through which needle and hub, a catheter 16 may be threaded and moved axially therethrough. A pliant plastics guard (17) encloses the assembly to the rear of portion (15) and the guard 30 encloses the needle (11) and hub portion (14) and that part of the catheter (16) extending therethrough. The guards (17) and 30 are removed prior to use, the needle (11) injected into a vein of a patient, catheter (16) slid into the vein, the needle (11) removed and guard 30 reaffixed.
