Abstract

1,263,924. Cable drums. FATHOM OCEANOLOGY Ltd. 16 May, 1969 [17 May, 1968], No. 23638/68. Heading B8M. Apparatus for storing a cable comprises a first rotatable drum 4, a second rotatable drum 5 spaced apart from and substantially surrounding said first drum 4, a helical groove on the outer surface of each drum to receive said cable, means 11 for arresting rotation of said second drum and access means for passage of said cable from said first drum 4, after winding thereon, on to said second drum 5. The helical groove of the second drum 5 is preferably of opposite hand to that of the first drum 4, so that the cable is wound on the second drum 5 in a reverse direction to the winding of the cable on the first drum 4. The second drum 5 is provided with a transverse slot 14, 15 to permit cable to be wound upon and unwound from the first drum 4 when the second drum is stationary. The rotation of the second drum 5 is arrested by means of an hydraulic ram 11 engaging the surface of the drum. The second drum 5 may also be locked relative to the first drum 4 by means of an hydraulic ram 9 mounted on the second drum 5 and engaging the first drum 4. The access means comprises in combination a ramp attached to the first drum 4 and an overlying chamber 19 attached to the second drum 5, the ramp communicating with the chamber to cause a locking action between the first and second drums when the cable overlies the ramp in passage from the first drum to the second drum. The first drum 4 may be driven directly and the second drum mounted on bearings for independent rotation. In a further embodiment, a third drum is spaced apart from and surrounding the second drum, access being provided from the second drum to the third drum. The helical groove provided on the surface of each drum is deep enough to envelop a faired cable.
