A magnetic separating apparatus for separating bar ends from loose swarf comprises a main endless conveyor 1 carrying the bar ends and swarf and a magnetic device set at an angle to the main conveyor and consisting of magnets 5 attached between two driven endless chains 4 and movable below a non- magnetic plate 6, the magnets diverting the bar ends from the main conveyor onto the non-magnetic plate 6 and moving them along the plate to be discharged over the end of the plate.
