Abstract

A method of making a leather-like material comprises-applying a polyurethane foam-forming composition to a surface of a supporting sheet, e.g. a silicone resin coated paper, which has been previously coated with a thermoplastic polyurethane resin, placing the coated sheet in an oven maintained at a temperature within the range of from 110‹ to 170‹C. for a period of time necessary to effect foaming and partial cross-linking of the composition and produce a first composite structure; making a second composite structure by impregnating a layer of non- woven fibres, e.g. of polyamide fibres optionally admixed with up to 50% of polyester fibres, with a latex of natural or synthetic rubber, bonding said layer to a knitted fabric of polyamide fibres by a polyurethane adhesive composition to obtain an assembly, passing said assembly through a continuous curing unit for a time sufficient to set the rubber and cross-link the adhesive, applying the knitted fabric surface of the second composite structure to the partially cross-linked polyurethane surface of the first composite structure, heating the resultant assembly in an oven maintained at a temperature of from 110‹ to 170‹ C. for a period of time necessary to complete cross-linking of the partially expanded cross-linked expanded polyurethane and stripping the supporting sheet from the resultant leather-like material. The exemplified polyurethane foam-forming composition comprises a mixture of a polyester or polyether having a molecular weight of 1000 to 4000, a polyisocyanate, a blowing agent, a curing catalyst and a foam-stabilizing agent. The paper sheet may be grained or embossed on the surface to be coated.
