Abstract

126,346. Mansell, J. H., and Redpath, R. Dec. 29, 1916. Machine guns.-Consists in feeding cartridges from a magazine 31, where they lie in single row side by side, to the breech of the gun by means of a pair of cams 52, which are rocked simultaneously in opposite directions. This is effected by a pair of racks 46, 49 interconnected by a lever 47 and actuated through a vertically sliding rod 40 by a groove 38 at the side of a sliding breech block 3. The cartridges are pressed down by a spring lever 32 when the breech is opened, and the base of the lowest cartridge is stopped by a ledge 35 sufficiently low down to enable the breech block to engage the cartridge in its closing movement. The groove 38 is designed to actuate the cams to and fro during this closing movement only. When the magazine is empty, a lever 63 is swung into it by a spring buffer 62; and this, by means of another lever 65 on the same spindle 64, and a vertically sliding rod 66, causes a lever 67 to catch a projection 71 on the breech mechanism to hold the breech open. This catch is released by pressure on a handle 72, when the magazine is again filled. The breech mechanism and the firing mechanism is described in Specification 126,345.
