1,263,337. Collecting and folding sheets. SCHNELLPRESSENFABRIK KOENIG & BAUER A.G. 10 Feb., 1969 [11 Sept., 1968], No. 7115/69. Heading B8R. A collecting cylinder is provided with five sets of collecting pins or grippers around its periphery and is associated with sheet-removal means at two positions spaced at 120 degrees around its circumference, the arrangement being such that, regardless of whether sheets are collected or not, there are breaks in the flow of sheets through either of the sheet-removal means to allow subsequent folding devices to run at reduced speeds. Fig. 1 illustrates apparatus in which a web 1, which has been printed by a plate cylinder having four different pages on its circumference, is severed by cutting cylinders 2, 3 to produce sheets corresponding to each page, which are transferred to collecting cylinder 4 provided with five equally-spaced sets of pins or grippers. Transfer cylinders 5, 6 are spaced 120 degrees apart around the periphery of cylinder 4, and are associated with folding cylinders 17, 18 which deliver the sheets to positions DI, DII, DIII, DIV. An alternative arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown) provides cutting and folding blades on the collecting cylinder. Operation of the pins or grippers is controlled by a stationary cam 7 fixed to the machine, and a rotating cam 11 on the end face of cylinder 4 (also Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), the pins being withdrawn or the grippers opened only when corresponding recesses in the cams are aligned. Three modes of use are possible: (i) non-collecting production where alternate sheets are transferred to cylinders 5 and 6, and are delivered to respective positions DI, DII, DIII, DIV; (ii) single-collection where cylinder 5 is inoperative, and two sheets are collected on cylinder 4 before transfer, the first pair being delivered to position DII, the second pair to position DIV; (iii) double-collection where all four sheets in a set are collected on cylinder 4 before transfer, are transferred to cylinder 6 and delivered at location DIV. In each of these modes of use there will be a break in the stream of sheets being fed to a particular folder, so that it can operate at reduced speed.
