Abstract

1,263,231. Removing CO 2 electrolytically. TRW Inc. Jan. 1, 1970, No.97/70. Heading C7B. CO 2 is separated from admixture with O 2 with or without other gases, e. g. from air, using an electrolytic cell 10 having an anode 12 and a cathode 11 with a carbonate or bicarbonate (e. g. K 2 CO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 , Li 2 CO 3 , Cs 2 CO 3 or NaHCO 3 ) electrolyte 13 therebetween, wherein the gaseous mixture is introduced through line 16 against the cathode and the CO 2 and O 2 therefrom is transported through the electrolyte as carbonate ions which react with H 2 introduced to the anode through line 17 to produce CO 2 and water vapour, the latter (with unreacted H 2 ) being withdrawn through line 18 and the CO 2 -depleted gas being withdrawn through line 19. The water vapour produced may be condensed and passed to an electrolysis cell for producing O 2 and H 2 , the latter being fed to the anode of cell 10, and the CO 2 and H 2 recovered may be reacted to form C and water, thus providing a closed regenerative life support system, Fig. 1 (not shown). The electrolyte may be an aqueous solution of the carbonate immobilized in a matrix, e. g. an asbestos diaphragm, or ion-exchange membrane, or a molten carbonate electrolyte. The electrodes may be of Pt or a mixture of Pt black and PTFE pressed into a wire mesh screen.
