Abstract

1,263,130. Magnetic heads. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 24 Sept. 1969 [16 Oct., 1968; 9 Jan., 1969], No. 47038/69. Heading G5R. A magnetic head has a record/playback gap 15 and an erase gap 20 with their longitudinal axes relatively inclined, the gap 15 falling within the confines of the gap 20. The arrangement prevents pre-echo caused by playback from the erase gap. The head is made by: (a) fixing a U-shaped ferrite or laminated alloy core 121 to a brass plate 123 and cutting a trapezoidal channel through the core and into the plate; (b) locating a centre limb 135, with a corresponding tip, in the channel, and fixing a second plate 145 over the assembly by epoxy with the interposition of spacers 141, 143, the spacer ends extending into the channel and grooves in plate 145; (c) machining the operative face after filling the voids with epoxy; and (d) assembling the structure 165 in a casing 173 containing wound bobbins 166-168 and wedging an E-shaped lamination 179 on each side to complete the magnetic circuit.
