Abstract

1,263,080. Television. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 5 May, 1969 [6 May, 1968], No. 21434/68. Heading H4F. In a light detector array in which a plurality of light detectors, e.g. photo-diodes, are successively scanned and in which the amount of light falling on each detector is determined by initially charging each detector and detecting the charge remaining thereon after being exposed for a period defining an integration time, the integration time is made different from the scanning rate of the plurality of detectors by delaying the initial charging of each detector with respect to the instant at which it was scanned. In the embodiment described the detectors are arranged in matrix configuration in lines and columns and are successively scanned by means of ring counters, the desired integration time being achieved by delaying the time at which a detector is charged relative to the time at which it is sampled. Although the delay may be continuously variable it is preferably a digital delay which delays a signal which is dependent upon the column or line scanning rate, this delayed signal being fed to a shift register associated with the lines or columns of the matrix array which causes the light detectors of the array to be successively charged, i.e. the integration time of the detectors are varied in multiples of the line or column scan time. Alternatively an input scanning signal (clock signal) may be digitally delayed and fed to a further ring counter associated with the lines or columns of the matrix array operable for causing the light detectors of the array to be successively charged. By having a short integration time less blur will be obtained when the detected image is moving. In addition by varying the integration time the signal level and thus overall sensitivity of the array is varied. An automatic control of sensitivity of the array in proportion to the light level may be provided.
