Abstract

1,262,889. Foamed thermoplastic resins. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 2 Feb., 1970 [24 Feb., 1969], No. 9728/69. Headings C3C and C3P. A foamed resin is made by extruding a heatsoftened foamable thermoplastic resin containing a volatile blowing agent (i.e. a gas; vapour or liquid which under pressure before extrusion is present in solution in the resin) and a nucleating agent comprising a carbohydrate (i.e. an organic compound that is a polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketone or a compound that yields such aldehydes or ketones on hydrolysis) that does not melt or decompose under the conditions of the extrusion, the mixture being extruded into a zone of lower pressure to allow foaming of the resin. The resin may be polyethylene, or a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. The nucleating agent may be cane sugar, sucrose, arabinose, xylose, dextrose, galactose, sorbose, lactose, starch, dextrin or cellulose, with optionally a microcrystalline wax, silica or talc. The blowing agent may be butane or nitrogen.
