A washing machine comprises a first open top tub 25 containing an agitator 28 movable about a vertical axis, a second imperforate open top tub 50 mounted on the agitator 28 and a pump 7 which during washing draws liquid from the first drum 25 inwardly of the cylinder and directs it through the upper portion of the agitator from whence it flows down through conduits formed between the tub 50 and the agitator 28, none of the liquid entering tub 50. Tub 25 is mounted in a water collection chamber 3 beneath which is mounted a reversible drive motor 6 which in one direction drives agitator 28 and in the other the spin drying tub 25 and also drives discharge pump 7. The drive includes unidirectional clutch 17 in a casing 15 and a slip clutch 21. Casing 15 rotates during spinning and with it tub 25 but is held by a brake or snubber during washing. Coil spring 27 is mounted between motor frame 5 and a damping device in the base of chamber 3. Tub 25 has a heavy stabilising ring 42. Tube 47 has a resilient grommet 51 supporting a filter 56 and serrations which engage serrations 53 on the agitator post 30 and is shaped to form channels 55 with the agitator. During spinning, liquid escapes from tub 47 through openings 59 in a ledge 58 and over a protective member 76 into chamber 3. Tub 47 has a cover comprising first member 60 with ribs engaging the top of the wall 50 to form openings through which liquid passes during spin drying and a second member 64 attached to member 60 the cover being a "snap" fit in tube 47. Tub 47 is filled through openings 70, 71 in members 60, 64 by a solenoid operated valve 74 connected to hot and cold water supplies and when space 72 is full the liquid is diverted and flows through filter 56 to fill tub 25.
