Abstract

1,262,577. Stretching. HERR EQUIPMENT CORP. 21 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 9555/69. Heading B3E. A method of permanently elongating metal strip comprises applying tension to the strip and constraining the tensioned strip to at least one bend and at least one bend reversal such that yielding occurs on at least one side of the strip and such that on the first and all subsequent bend reversals the slope of that portion of the stress distribution curve for tensile and compressive stresses less than the tensile or compressive yield stress respectively reflects both the immediate previous bending strain and the existing bending strain reversal but is otherwise independent of bending strain history. Equations are given which show the relation between elongation strain and the applied tensile force for successive bends of specified radii on a strip of specified thickness and tensile yield strain; the equations taking into account yielding at one or both sides of the strip at one or both of two successive bends. Examples of the application of these equations to a strip are given in which the values for elongation strain and tensile force were measured using the apparatus shown in Fig. 8 in which tension is applied to a strip 11 by an hydraulic cylinder 12 and measured by gauges 13 and 14 at each end of the strip. Bending strains are applied by rolls 17, 18 and 19 carried on a cart 20 running on a smooth track 21. A gauge length (50 inches) is marked on the strip, tension applied and the strip elongated by moving the cart with its rolls along the strip. The elongations obtained by measuring the distance between the gauge marks after stretching are in close agreement with those obtained from the equations given.
