Abstract

1,262,383. Polyester polyols and polyurethanes derived therefrom. INTER-POLYMER RESEARCH CORP. 20 March, 1969 [22 March, 1968], No. 14830/69. Heading C3R. Polyester polyols are prepared by reacting (A) an oligomer of an #-hydroxycaproic acid or a mixture thereof with the monomeric acid or'(B) a lower alkyl ester of an #-hydroxycaproic acid, an oligomer thereof, or a mixture of monomer and oligomer with (C) a compound having at least two hydroxyl and/or amino groups. The reaction may be carried out using conventional poly-esterification or trans-esterification catalysts, e.g. tetra-alkyl titanates or organo-tin compounds, but when starting material (A) is used a catalyst is not essential. Copolyester polyols may be produced by replacing part of starting material (A) or (B) with a mixture of a polycarboxylic acid and a polyol or with a lactone other than caprolactone, e.g. pivalolactone. Starting material A may be obtained by hydrolysis of an #-caprolactone as described in Specification 1,262,384 and (B) by an analogous acid-catalysed alcoholysis. The polyester polyols produced, especially those having molecular weights in the range 500-2000, may be used to prepare polyurethane elastomers by reaction; using either the "oneshot" or "prepolymer" technique, with a polyisocyanate and e.g. a polyol in known manner. The examples describe the preparation of elastomers from polyesterdiols and copolyesterdiols by reaction with 4,41-diphenylmethane diisocyanate or tolylene diisocyanates to give a prepolymer which is reacted with 1,4- butanediol or 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene-bis(2-chloroaniline).
