Abstract

1,262,326. Cutting helical grooves. RANK XEROX Ltd. 15 June, 1970 [16 June, 1969], No. 30397/69. Heading B3T. A machine tool for cutting a helical groove in a rotating cylindrical workpiece comprises a headstock and a tailstock 28 between which the workpiece is located, a rotary spindle 23 in the headstock which is driven by belt and gearing 32, and a rotary cutter mounted in a cutter head 44 which is supported on a carriage 37 which is displaceable on the machine bed parallel to the axis of rotation of the workpiece. The cutter is rotated by a motor 42 via a belt 43 and the carriage carrying the cutter head is displaceable parallel to the workpiece axis by a cam 35 on the machine bed which engages a follower 36 on the carriage which is urged into engagement with the cam surface by a weight 38. The drive to the cam and to the spindle are synchronized to effect cutting of the required contoured groove in the surface of the workpiece. In the embodiment described the workpiece is in the form of a plastics covered steel tube which is held on the spindle by an expanding mandrel and the groove is formed in the plastics material.
