Abstract
1,262,321. Luminescent materials. GTE SYLVANIA Inc. 15 Jan., 1969 [19 Jan., 1968], No. 2338/69. Heading C4S. A phosphor comprises lanthanum oxysulphide activated by erbium preferably having the formula (La 1-x Er x ) 2 O 2 S, where 0À05>x>0À0005. The phosphor is prepared by dissolving separately La 2 O 3 and Er 2 O 3 in HNO 3 , mixing and precipitating La and Er oxalates by adding oxalic acid. The precipitate is filtered at 110‹ C., fired in air then in N 2 -H 2 S at 1250‹ C. The oxalates may be replaced by nitrates, oxides, sulphates, acetates and tartrates; H 2 S may be replaced by a compound, e.g. thioacetamide, which decomposes to form H 2 S on heating. The phosphor is used in colour TV tubes and fluorescent lamps. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,121,055.
