1,262,219. Phenyl acetates. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 27 May, 1970 [9 June, 1969 (2); 5 Nov., 1969; 17 Nov., 1969; 4 Feb., 1970], No. 25469/70. Heading C2C. Mono- or di-alkyl-substituted or unsubstituted phenyl acetate is obtained by reacting benzene or a mono- or di-(C 1 -C 4 )alkyl-benzene with acetic acid and a molecular O 2 -containing gas, in the presence of Pd or a compound thereof and HNO 3 or alkali metal nitrate. Specified palladium compounds are the oxide, hydroxide, acetate, propionate and nitrate. Examples are given of the production of the compounds. Nitrobenzene and nitrotoluene are obtained as by-products.
