Abstract

1,262,192. Modifying the composition of molten glass. A.C.I. OPERATIONS PTY. Ltd. 30 April, 1969 [1 May, 1968], No. 22143/69. Heading C1M. To modify the composition of molten glass as it flows through a forehearth from a melting furnace to a discharge position, pellets are supplied thereto at a rate proportional to the discharge rate of the molten glass, the pellets being substantially uniform in weight and composition and comprising one or more composition-modifying metal salts and the salts being mixed uniformly in the glass before it reaches the discharge position. Preferably the pellets are pneumatically conveyed and projected downwardly on to the surface of the molten glass in advance of a submerged passage through which the glass is constrained to flow. The molten glass in the forehearth is electrically heated, as by spaced electrodes transversely arranged over the full width of the forehearth and the glass is mechanically stirred adjacent to and downstream of the submerged passage. Skimmer blocks may be provided either side of the pellet supplier.
