Abstract

1,262,026. Biocidal compositions. TH. GOLDSCHMIDT AG. 30 June, 1970 [2 July, 1969], No. 31719/70. Heading A5E. A synergistic biocidal mixture comprises a quaternary ammonium compound and a 2-N- alkyl or alkylarylamino-6-aminopyridine of general formula: wherein R' is an alkyl radical containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms, the number of carbon atoms being even or a benzyl radical which is chlorinated in the 2- and/or 4-position, the weight ratio of a:b being from 1:5 to 5:1. Examples of suitable quaternary ammonium compounds are: where R is an alkyl radical containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms and X is halogen, OH or CH 3 OSO 3 wherein R is an alkyl radical containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms and X is halogen, OH or CH 3 OSO 3 , and where R is an alkyl radical containing 8 to 18 carbon atoms and X is halogen, OH or CH 3 OSO 3 . The mixture may also contain a non-ionic tenside, i.e. surface active agent, in which case the weight ratio between components a, b and c should be from 1:5:10 to 5:1:0.1. Compositions according to the invention may have their pH adjusted by the addition of organic or inorganic acids. The individual components may be mixed per se or dissolved in water, an alcohol or a glycolether. Higher pH values may be obtained e.g. by the addition of Na 3 PO 4 , sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, triethanolamine. The present preparations may be used as disinfectants and preservatives in food stuffs and may also be used in food processing plants, hospitals, animal breeding establishments and breweries. The compositions of the invention are also effective algaecides.
