Abstract

1,261,759. Water-fast inks. GILLETTE CO. 2 April, 1969 [9 April, 1968], No. 17409/69. Heading C3P. A water-fast ink solution for ballpoint pens comprises (1) a water-insoluble resin in solution in a solvent therefor in an amount sufficient to raise the viscosity of the ink solution to 8000- 25,000 centipoises and (2) 20-50% by weight of a water-insoluble dye salt formed in situ in the presence of the resin by reaction of a sulphonic acid dye and a basic dye and/or an acid salt of a basic dye wherein the acid is a mineral acid or a carboxylic acid, the dye being soluble in the solvent for the resin. In an example the water-insoluble resin is a styreneallyl alcohol copolymer and the solvent is a mixture of diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, butylene glycol and octylene glycol.
