Abstract

1,261,697. Boiling point indicators. INSTITUT ORGANICHESKOI KHIMII IMENI N.D. ZELINSKOGO AN SSSR. June 3, 1970, No.26742/70. Heading G1D. In apparatus for measuring the boiling point of a substance, in which a liquid-vapour mixture of the substance is fed through a vapour life 16-19 to temperature measuring device 14, the vapour lift comprises a chamber 16 divided by at least one partition 18 into a number of sections 17, each of a plurality of nozzles 19 for feeding the liquidvapour mixture on to the temperature measuring device 14 communicating with a respective section 17. As shown, apparatus for measuring the difference between the boiling points of a pure solvent and the solvent containing a measured quantity of a substance to determine the molecular weight of the substance comprises a test cell 1 within a lagged jacket 2, the jacket containing a quantity of pure solvent which is boiled by a heater 4 to maintain the temperature of the apparatus. A return condenser 5 prevents loss of the solvent. The test cell 1 has a heater 6 surrounded by glass particles to act as boiling nuclei, the chamber 16 of the vapour lift being directly above the heater 6. Columns of solvent, as alternating zones of liquid and vapour, rise up the nozzle tubes 19 to the temperature measuring device 14. The vapour passes into an annular gap 12 between the test cell wall and a cylinder 11 therein and into a tube 9 provided with a return condenser 10. The lower end of the tube 9 returns condensed solvent to the test cell. An infrared screen 20 surrounding the test cell reduces the noise level of the device 19 arising from boiling solvent in the jacket. The substance to be added to the solvent is put into the test cell via the tube 9. A mercury filled drain tube 7 is provided to the test cell. The apparatus is usable to determine molecular weights or organic compounds and to calibrate thermocouples and thermometers.
