Abstract
1,261,636. Chromium plating elongated articles. INSTITUTUL DE CERCETARI TEHNOLOGICE PENTRU CONSTRUCTII DE MASINI. Feb. 26, 1969, No.10157/69. Heading C7B. An elongated metallic surface is chromium plated section by section, each section being plated by arranging it in a plating electrolyte in spaced relation to an anode and disposing a pair of screens at cathode potential at the limits of the section and at equal distances from the anode. Fig.1 shows an elongated rod 1 to be plated the section being plated being sealed in plating tank 2 by sealing members 3. A perforated anode 4 of Pb-Sb or Pb-Sn-Ag alloy surrounds the section, and two screens, one of which 5a, is shown, surround the rod at the ends of the section. Each screen, Fig.2, is made of two semi-annular elements of insulating material which together make an annular member 6 with a thinwalled annular metallic element 8 mounted thereon by screws 7. The tank 4 is filled with chromium plating electrolyte and the article is given anodic treatment for 90 seconds at increasing current density of 12-40 amps/sq. dm. The polarity is reversed and plating is operated at 40-60 amps/sq. dm., the electrolyte containing 200-250 g/l of CrO 3 and 2-2À5 g/l of sulphate ions. The screens ensure a chromium layer of progressively diminishing thickness in the region of the screens, and this is built up to a layer of uniform thickness by operations on successive sections.
