Abstract

1,261,622. Air cell. LEESONA CORP. 10 June, 1969 [10 June, 1968], No. 29387/69. Heading H1B. A metal-air cell comprises an outer case 33, having ventilating means therein, a cathode 11, concentric with and disposed within the case, the cathode having a gas-permeable, liquid impermeable face and an electrocatalytic face, a porous metallic anode 1, the anode and cathode being one inside the other, liquid-tight closure means 5, for the case and an electrolyte between the electrodes. The gas side of the cathode may be of P.T.F.E. The electrolyte side may comprise a mixture of P.T.F.E. with a metal of Group VIII or Group I B of the Periodic Table. A current collector of porous metal may contact this face. The anode may be a plate with holes in it (Fig. 2, not shown) or a wire mesh filled with active metal, e.g. zinc. The electrolyte may be KOH contained in a reservoir 25 which may be ruptured before use by pin 23. Alternatively reservoir 25 may contain water and anhydrous KOH may be contained in the anode. The electrodes are separated by membrane 4 of a copolymer of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile. The case and cap may be of polythene and the outside of the case may be protected by metal shield 31.
