Abstract

1,261,542. Testing pneumatic tyres. UNIROYAL Inc. 14 Jan., 1969 [2 May, 1968], No. 2047/69. Heading B7C. [Also in Division G2] A method of testing pneumatic tyres for sub-surface structural irregularities comprises inflating a tyre T to a pressure at which it will have a tendency to grow over a finite period of time, and comparing a first growth stage of the tyre with a later growth stage by holographic interferometry to create an interference pattern 22, 22a representative of the growth of the tyre, any abnormalities in the interference pattern being representative of an' other than normal degree of growth at a respective section of the tyre and indicating the presence and nature of a corresponding subsurface structural irregularity therein. In one embodiment a hologram is made of one section of the tyre, e.g. a side-wall, the recording medium developed and the hologram reconstructed after a finite time interval when the tyre has grown, the reconstructed image being superimposed on the illuminated tyre at its axial growth stage. Any irregularities are shown as abnormalities 22a in the interference pattern 22. Alternatively, two superimposed holograms can be made at different growth stages and then reconstructed to give superimposed images and the same effect. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,142,702.
