Abstract
1,261,503. A method of detaching loose leaves united into books. NETHERLANDS POSTAL & TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICE, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF. 28 Jan., 1970 [28 Jan., 1969], No. 4085/70. Heading B8C. In a process for releasing the leaves of at least one book which has been formed by uniting the leaves by a backing layer L of glue, one, or more, books a-e are gathered together and compressed in a frame, Fig. 6, to form a solid block while a milling cutter 6 cuts out a groove 1 across the leaves and removes the strip of glue L. A pack of books, preferably of punch cards S and initially placed between side boards 4, 5 preferably provided with grooves to let the cutter 6 pass, are placed in the upper compressing compartment of a frame wherein a movable end wall 8 is pressed towards the other end wall 10 and secured, by knobs 44, 45 which slide in slots in a base 11, to maintain the books in a compressed state. The end wall 10, and a side wall 13, are common to the upper and lower compartments of the frame both compartments being open at the front and the lower compartment having a fixed end wall 9, and an inspection opening 17 in the side wall 13. The cutter 6 provides a groove 1 with divergent sides. In a machine for carrying out the process a number of receptacles, filled with books in their upper compartments and containing the original wrappings of the books in their lower compartments, are placed at the input end 34 on a conveyer 25, a sensor 14 and a photo-electric sensor 15, 16 signalling respectively if the books are wrongly placed or if the packing is not in the lower compartment so that defective frame can be removed at a first stopping point 35. A correctly filled frame is held up at stopping points 36, 37 which operate one at a time and, upon arriving at the point.37, causes the operation of a device which senses if the machine is already handling a frame. With no preceding frame in the machine the frame at the point 37 is pushed laterally by a ram 26 so that projections 18, 19 on the frame engage in guides 20, 21 on a movable milling table 24, where spring-loaded rams (32, 33), Fig. 9, (not shown), descend to align the books and a ram 30 holds the books together while the table 24 moves them forward under the cutter 6. The latter removes the glue strip L, while a succeeding frame moves up to the point 39. At the end of the cutting stroke the frame carrying the books is released by the ram 30 and a ram 27 pushes the frame back on to the belt 25. As the belt 25 carries the frame operated upon out of the machine the frame, waiting at the stop 39 moves up to the stop 40 for transfer by a ram 41 into the guides 20, 21 of the milling table 24 where the rams 31 and 30 align, and hold, the books respectively before the table 24 is moved in the opposite direction beneath the cutter 6 and to a position where a ram 42 can move it laterally on to the conveyer 25 which conveys it from the machine.
