Abstract

1,261,282. Making roller-chains; punching. MASSEY-FERGUSON GmbH. 21 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968; 14 June, 1968], No. 9509/69. Headings B3A and B3W. In a method and a machine, Fig. 4, for assembling roller-chain links a backing plate 32 is placed over a pair of pins 31 which have spring catches 31A in face to face relation, bushes, having a longitudinal seam and an aperture 34 at the seam, are then placed over the pins and rotated by a friction surface 37 as a table 30 carrying the pins is rotated. This rotation of the bushes continues until the catches 31A engage apertures 34 and so ensure the bushes are in a specific orientation before they are pressfitted into the backing plate. The bushes are made from a strip, Fig. 1, by straightening the strip, 11, punching a hole in it by means of a punch 13, shearing along a line passing through the hole by means of a shear 21 and bending the sheared portion around a mandrel 27 using dies 26, 26A. The punch 13 is cam operated, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the strip held by a hold-down 12A during punching.
