Abstract

1,261,131. Lapping. BURMAH OIL TRADING Ltd. 3 Sept., 1970 [6 June, 1969], No. 28676/69. Heading B3D. A lapping machine includes a lapping plate 1 rotatable with a backing plate 5 formed with a spiral channel 6 for cooling liquid. Water from a trough 12 may enter the channel 6 through an inlet 7, discharging through a rotating outlet pipe 14 into an annular trough 15. Alternatively, Fig. 2, water may enter through a pipe 25 within an axial bore 24 of a plate drive shaft 23, the pipe 25 rotating with the shaft 23 and entering an inlet chamber 26 of the backing plate 18, while a mechanical seal, Fig. 3 (not shown), seals the pipe 25 to an inlet pipe connection (31) of a casing 30. Water discharges through a conduit 28 and the bore 24 around the pipe 25 to an outlet (38) of the casing 30. Further, Fig. 4 (not shown), water may be fed to the backing plate (49) through a drive shaft bore, discharging from an outlet (56) adjacent the plate periphery into a non-rotatable annular trough (57) drained by a pipe (59), the outlet (56) having interchangeable nozzle inserts 58 for varying the rate of flow. The lapping plate has radial grooves for abrasive slurry removal, and ram means 4 may control the intensity of the abrading action.
