Abstract

1,260,971. Tetrahydrobenzothieno[2,3-c]pyridines. COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO. 29 Jan., 1970, No. 4333/70. Heading C2C. The invention comprises compounds of formula and their pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts, wherein A and A 1 are each H, OH, NO 2 , C 1-14 alkyl or alkoxy, F, Cl, Br, I or CF 3 (but A and A 1 may not both be H), and processes for preparing them by (a) treating the corresponding 2-(benzothienyl)ethylamine with paraformaldehyde at elevated temperature, or (b) treating the corresponding lactam with a chemical reducing agent. Details are also given for the preparation of starting materials and in which X is 5-chlorobenzothienyl. Therapeutic compositions comprise compounds of the above formula, which have antipsychotic properties. Administration may be oral or parenteral.
