Abstract
1,260,729. Removing water from calcium sulphate; continuous furnaces. KNAUF SAAR GIPSWERKE G.m.b.H. GEB. 29 May, 1969 [31 May, 1968; 3 Aug., 1968], No. 27199/69. Headings F4B and F4G. Water is removed from calcium sulphate by passing the material, e.g. gypsum, in the form of a body 2 of superposed horizontal layers of different particle size, on a moving air permeable grate 1 through a heating zone 4 wherein combustion gases from burner 11 are drawn through the material by fans e.g. 14, and to prevent overheating of the sloping lateral sides which are less resistant to passage of combustion gases, the lowermost layer of finest particle size is arranged to having lateral portions deeper than a central portion. This may be achieved using a shaped vertically adjustable template 18 (Fig. 3, not shown) at the exit from supply hopper 3. Preferably at least one of the lateral portions is two to five times as deep as the central portion, and as shown, a higher bank 15 on one side is provided to compensate for uneven gas flow due to there being more fans on one side than the other. This may provide a fine adjustment of gas flow, a coarse adjustment being obtained by using a grate whose free cross-sectional area varies laterally. The grate may consist of an endless air-permeable belt cover with a perforated sheet of metal, wire fabric or like mesh.
