Abstract

126,055. Farquhar, M. G., and Hill, A. H. Nov. 20, 1916. Breech actions, sliding breech-block; sliding barrel and breech-block; cooling barrels; protecting from dust and rain; protecting from heat of barrel; stocks; sights.-Relates to automatic guns in which the breech is opened and closed by the system of springs described in Specifications 28587/07, 17211/09, and 27072/11, and provided with the magazine described in Specification 8172/15, and consists (1) of special means for attaching the magazine, (2) in enclosing the greater part of the barrel and the system of springs by a tubular sheath, (3) of a catch for holding the bolt-operating slide in its retracted position, and (4) in providing at the rear end of the breech-body a special detachable closing cap carrying the backsight. A gap c, Fig. 1, is formed in the breech-body for the reception of the magazine which is secured by spring catches d<4>, d<5>, Fig. 4. The tubular sheath i which may be covered with asbestos has ventilating holes at the sides adapted to be closed, when the gun is out of use, by slides i. At about the middle point of the sheath is a band k connected by a bar k' to a depending lug a<2> on the body. This bar is formed with a series of screw holes adapted to receive a handle l or the pivot support when the gun is fired from a stand. The sliding bolt cover b is held in its rear position by a catch m<2>, m<1>, Fig. 4, adapted to be released by the trigger or by an external thumb-piece. A safety-device o is also provided to lock the cover in its forward position. The end closing-cap r, Fig. 4, has an axial projection r<2> provided with side wings r<3> which engage recesses on the inside of the body. The cap is secured by a slight rotation and is then locked by a catch s. The backsight is hinged to the cap.
