Abstract

1,260,554. Production of humic acid concentrates. I.C.B. INDUSTRIA CHIMICA E BIOLOGICA S.p.A. 12 May, 1969 [18 May, 1968], No. 24188/69. Heading C1B. The invention comprises a method for the production of a humic acid concentrate in which garbage is subjected to an exothermic primary fermentation controlled by aeration and stirring from time to time until the temperature drops to about its initial level, subjected to an exothermic secondary fermentation controlled by aeration under conditions of limited loss of moisture until the temperature drops below its initial level, crushed, treated with aqueous mineral acid to a pH of 5À0Œ0À5 and a moisture content of from 60 to 70%, fermented with a massive culture of Gliocladium Catenulatum or of the Eumycetes species at from 35‹ to 37‹ C., treated with alkali to a pH value of 7À0Œ 0À2, fermented with a massive culture of Streptomyces nigrifaciens or of an actinomycetic or strongly polyphenoloxydase species not antagonistic to Azotobacter chroococcum at from 28‹ to 30‹ C., fermented with a massive culture of Azotobacter chroococcum at from 28‹ to 30‹ C., extracted with aqueous alkali, and flocculated by addition of acid. Preferably the garbage is first treated to remove ferrous metals. The humic acid product may be converted into a salt by treatment with sodium, potassium, ammonium or calcium hydroxide. Optionally NH 4 NO 3 , Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , MgSO 4 , K 2 SO 4 , MnSO 4 or siliceous material may be present during the method of the invention.
