Abstract

1,260,287. Continuously moulding plastics foam blocks. COOLAG Ltd. 5 Feb., 1969 [6 Feb., 1968], No. 5778/68. Heading B5A. Polyurethane foam is continuously moulded from a reactive mixture (of isocyanate and a blend of polyol with catalysts, blowing agents, fire retardants and stabilizers) which is deposited on to a moving endless belt 10, from a transversely reciprocated nozzle 16, which co-operates with a pair of moving endless side belts, e.g. 14, and with a flat surface 19 which is inclined to the belt 10 so that the reactive mixture is continuously in contact therewith as it expands on foaming. The flat surface 19 may comprise a conveyer, but in the embodiment shown is a stationary platform angularly and longitudinally adjustable with respect to the belt 10, and which may be spring-loaded- Release papers line the bottom and side conveyers and the surface 19, traversing between unwinding and winding-up rolls at either end of the apparatus, and the bottom release paper may be upturned to overlap the side release papers. To prevent restriction of upward movement of the expanding foam by the side conveyers, additional side release papers may be provided which traverse downwardly from a pair of rolls, e.g. 20, around folding guide bars, e.g. 22, to follow an upward path, with the expanding foam, to rolls, e.g. 24. The side release papers may further be coated with soft high-melting point material. Some of the release papers may be dispensed with, e.g. if the side conveyer surfaces and the surface 19, when comprising a moving conveyer, are of polytetrafluoroethylene or are sprayed with silicone release agent. Uniform expansion across the width of the foaming block may be facilitated by the application of heat to the side regions thereof. high-melting point material. Some of the release papers may be dispensed with, e.g. if the side conveyer surfaces and the surface 19, when comprising a moving conveyer, are of polytetrafluoroethylene or are sprayed with silicone release agent. Uniform expansion across the width of the foaming block may be facilitated by the application of heat to the side regions thereof.
