Abstract
1,260,281. Screw jacks. RICHARD THOMAS & BALDWINS Ltd. 20 March, 1969 [25 Dec., 1967], No. 39319/67. Heading B8J. [Also in Division El] A jacking device 1 comprises a screwthreaded pillar 3 formed at its lower end with a ball 3 mounted in a housing 5 defining, with a top plate 6, a spherical cavity 8. The plate 6 renders the pillar 3 captive and able to take both compressive and tensile loads without axial play. The main thrust from the load is directed along the axis of the pillar 3. The housing 5 is integral with a base-plate 9 fastened by bolts 17 into the foundation of a building with a component 14 to be aligned or levelled by the jacking device. An upper plate 11A is attached by deformed lugs to the component 14 and formed centrally with a screw-threaded hole engaged by the pillar 3. Vertical adjustment is carried out by rotating the pillar 3 using an integral nut 12. After adjustment the device is locked by a lock-nut 13. Various structural components may include the jacking device and a number of such devices may be used. They are left in position in the course of building construction and may be used for possible future levelling of the building.
