Abstract

1,260,173. Biopsy needles. S. GOLDSMITH. 25 July, 1969, No. 37628/69. Heading A5R. A biopsy needle comprises a needle 14, terminating at one end in a base 12 for connection to a syringe and having a central longitudinal bore 18, the wall 26 of said bore, at the opposite end 16 to the base 12, being of constant taper inwardly from the outer edge 24 of the needle to provide a smooth uninterrupted cutting edge. The edge 24 is disposed entirely in a plane at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the needle or inclined at an angle x e.g. 15‹ with respect to a plane at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the needle. The base 12 has a wider bore 44 than the needle 14. The bores being connected by a tapered bore 46 and a curved outside surface 40 which provides a finger grip and a rim 42 to which a syringe may be connected. Disposed within the needle is a stop member 32, comprising a shank 36 and an enlarged end 34. The shank 36 is of such a size that it substantially fills the bore 18 but still allows fluid to pass therealong, while the head 34 has at least one dimension greater than the diameter of the bore 18 to prevent total insertion of the stop member into the bore. The difference in length between the stop member and the needle determines the length of a specimen taken.
