Abstract

1,259,247. Welding by pressure. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 3 June, 1970 [13 June, 1969], No. 26863/70. Heading B3R. In a method of explosively welding two metal parts e.g. tubes 1, 2, there is provided an intermediate layer 10 of a metal which is capable of preventing diffusion of hydrogen through the weld. The parts may be of steel and zircalloy. The layer 10 may be of a metal or alloy from the group: Au, Ga, In, T1, Ni, Ag, Be, A1 or Hg or may comprise two or more layers one of which may be selected for corrosion resistance. The layer 10 may be electroplated or clad by hammering or explosives on one of the parts or separately disposed in the weld zone. The parts are arranged for welding with a small space 9 between the tubes 1, 2, with an elastic buffer 3 between the weld zone and an explosive layer 4, an anvil 6 within the tube 2 and fuse strips 5 adhesively connected to tongues of the explosive coating 4.
