Abstract

1,258,949. Matrix displays; selective indicators. SONY CORP. 22 Dec., 1969 [23 Dec., 1968], No. 62408/69. Headings G4H and G5C. A display system comprises a glow discharge tube M having a plurality of indicator electrode units A, B, C, D ... each including an anode a and a plurality of cathodes Ka 1 ... Ka 7 , means for feeding current to the cathodes and a driving circuit which applies current to the anodes in such a manner that adjacent units are not caused to glow successively thereby reducing cross talk. In an A or Ne filled envelope, e.g. of a Nixie tube, identical units are arranged on a base plate 2. The anodes are connected through switches S to a power source B and the cathodes are connected together and grounded through ballast resistors R and switches S K . The output of a computer shift register 3 is supplied via a gate G to a buffer 4 from where it passes to a decoder 5 which actuates selected switches S K . The gate G is operated by a flip-flop circuit 7 connected to a pulse generator 6. The circuit 7 is also connected to differentiation and rectifier circuits 8, 9 whose output is applied to a shift register 10 arranged to actuate sequentially alternate anode switches S a , S b .... To further reduce cross talk the anodes and cathodes are positively biased when not actuated. The switches S a , S b ... each comprise a circuit including a transistor and transformer, 2 or 3 transistors or a Zener diode and two transistors.
