Abstract

125,860. British Thomson - Houston Co., (General Electric Co.). Aug. 16, 1918. Valve-gear. - A fuel-injection valve 8 for high-compresnion engines, a spring 34 for holding it to its seat, and an electro-magnet 19 for operating it are enclosed in a casing 7, 15, and no moving parts requiring stuffing-boxes pass through the casing. To reduce the current required in the solenoid, the armature is formed in two parts 31, 33. The part 31 is the head of the valve-stem 8 and can move independently of the part 33 after the latter has been moved into contact with the core of the magnet. By this arrangement, the distance separating the part 33 of the armature from the pole of the magnet is less than the lift of the valve, and the necessary force for causing the initial movement of the valve from its seat is obtained with a weaker current. This prevents destructive sparking on the commutator in the circuit of the solenoid.
